Applied Behavior Analysis in the Classroom and School Environments
For children with autism to thrive in school, they need a supportive environment where they feel safe, understood, and equipped to tackle the challenges of school life. At Inclusive ABA, we partner with schools to create a meaningful behavioral support system that empowers both students and teachers. Our goal is to provide every child with the tools and support they need to succeed, regardless of their individual needs.

Pairing
We start by building a strong, trusting relationship between your child, the therapist, and the teacher. This process, called "pairing," makes school feel positive and engaging. We use things your child enjoys—like their favorite activities or praise—to create a fun and supportive atmosphere that encourages them to be involved and participate.
Skill Development
In the classroom, we break things down into small, simple steps to make learning easier. Whether it’s staying focused during lessons, learning how to raise their hand, or following instructions, we use repetition and rewards to help your child build essential skills. We also focus on important life skills like communication and social interaction, using approaches like Pivotal Response Teaching (PRT). Plus, we keep things fun with rewards like token systems to encourage positive behaviors, such as staying on task or completing work.
Natural Environment for Learning
We tailor treatment plans to fit your child’s school routine, helping them apply what they learn in real-world situations. Whether it’s participating in class, asking questions, or following a classroom schedule, we make sure the skills they’re building work in their everyday school life. Our therapists adjust their strategies as needed, making sure they support your child through each challenge and reinforce positive behaviors as they happen.
The goals of ABA therapy in school settings
Manage Transitions
School involves a lot of switching between activities, like moving from class to class or going from free time to lessons. ABA helps kids manage these transitions smoothly by giving them the right tools so they don’t get overwhelmed or upset.
Stay Focused During Lessons
Kids often struggle to stay on task, especially during long lessons or when they get distracted. We use ABA techniques to help kids stay focused, whether it’s with visual reminders, small breaks, or a reward system for staying engaged.
Improve Social Interactions
Socializing at school can be tough, so we work on skills like making eye contact, starting conversations, and understanding social cues. For example, if a child struggles with taking turns during games, we’ll practice those skills in a structured way to build confidence.
Follow Directions and Routines
Your child will learn to follow directions more effectively, whether it’s raising their hand before speaking, following a class schedule, or completing homework. We break tasks down into small, manageable steps so they don’t feel overwhelmed.
Reduce Disruptive Behaviors
If a child is having trouble with behaviors like shouting out, getting distracted, or even refusing to follow the rules, we work on replacing these behaviors with more positive ones. For example, we might teach a child to raise their hand or use a calming strategy when they feel frustrated.

School-based ABA therapy is a personalized approach where trained ABA therapists work directly with students in the classroom to help them succeed academically and socially. The therapist collaborates with teachers to implement strategies that improve behaviors, communication skills, and social interactions, all while supporting your child’s learning in the classroom setting. ABA therapy focuses on teaching skills like staying focused, following instructions, and interacting with peers, ensuring children can thrive in school.
In Colorado, children can start ABA therapy as early as 18 months, and it is available through school settings for students from ages 3-21. The specific age to begin therapy depends on your child’s needs. Early intervention is key to helping your child thrive, so we recommend connecting with us to discuss how ABA can support your child’s success in school and beyond.

There is no exact time frame. Some students may show noticeable progress in a few weeks, especially with small goals like staying focused during lessons or following directions. It may take a few months to see significant changes in more complex behaviors or skill development. Our therapist regularly assesses and updates the treatment plan to ensure progress. The key to success is consistent support from both the therapist and school staff, along with regular communication to adjust strategies as needed.
